The Box SF offers corporate meeting and off-site meeting space, classes/workshops and houses the largest antiquarian paper and advertising archive in the United States within our letterpress shop!
We're located at 1069 Howard Street (Between 6th and 7th) In the South of Market area of San Francisco, just 2 blocks from Moscone Convention Center and Civic Center BART station. The Box SF is the former 'William Randolph Hearst Printing Plant' and one of San Francisco’s premiere event spaces. In 2018 it was expanded, transformed and restored to accommodate a wealth of printed history, product, books, packaging, antiques and original and hand crafted letterpress printed matter and related hand-crafted product. A Full class and workshop schedule has been created too!
While we still do a limited number of Corporate and Charity
Events for up to 50 people, we now also produce a myriad
of Classes, Workshops and Lectures on the subjects of “All
Things Printed!”, for the Maker Community, and Corporations
wanting a Creative environment! We have 5 spaces available
in this spectacular building including:
Our capacity is 50 in our historic main gate room and top floor breakout space where we feature a breathtaking 335-year old conference/dining table made from antique Chinese village gate doors. The table seats 32 guests and the room can seat 50 by adding a second table.
We have three meeting suites on our second floor, that hold from 2 to 25 guests:
Our Buddy Suite can welcome up to 25 guests. Our Webster Suite can welcome from 8 to 16 guests. Our Willy Suite can welcome up to 8 guests
For special occasions we have a historic letterpress printing shop and 1850's mercantile on our ground floor, it can be rented for creative off-sites, small board meetings, classes, workshops, film/video shoots and receptions for 16 to 24 people.
Each of our creative meeting spaces include a pull down projection screen, Wifi, and furniture. Our top floor can be configured in a variety of ways, including using outside furniture rental and full tech buildout. We have full bar packages, multiple catering options or charge an outside catering fee if you prefer a caterer not on our approved list. We have no food and beverage minimums however!
The Pressroom on the ground floor of this three story building, has presses dating as early as 1838. Each of our historic Printing presses have been perfectly restored and are in working order. The Box SF prints, produces, exhibits, sells product and educates it’s Client’s on the remarkable and varied types of printing that were done in the past and continues using those same methods in our own work everyday! The entire building is filled with 15 million of pieces of antique and rare ephemera, prints, posters, toys, labels, cards, books, packaging and graphic objects dating from 1700 to today. We are also a frequent host on AirBNB Experiences.
We also house house many thousands of tools, printing objects, design materials and other resources to collage, rubber stamp, perforate, crimp and create journals, books, cards, and unique printed matter of every type. Archivists love our material, collectors and dealers from all over the world are in the shop daily, and some of the leaders of the design and printing industry collaborate with us 365 days a year and from all over the world!
